Clyde Valley High's news this week.
Holocaust Memorial Day:
Pupils from all year groups have been reflecting upon the lessons of history as part of the school’s marking of the recent Holocaust Memorial Day. History, Modern Languages, Modern Studies, Religious and Moral Education and English all asked pupils from S1-S3 to research and consider the atrocities of the Holocaust and to think about how modern society could make sure they are never repeated.
In S1 German classes, for example, pupils were working through the book 'The Boy in Striped Pyjamas'. They used what they had learned to link with events in the Holocaust. They spent time learning about Berlin and looking at places such as Babelplatz, where the infamous Burning of the Books took place in 1933, the Olympic Stadium (built for the 1936 Olympic Games), as well as finding out about the impressive 'Museum for the Murdered Jews of Europe' which is also located in Berlin.
One of the most powerful messages of the week’s reflection came from sixth year students, Chloe Binnie and Kyle Allan. Earlier in the session, the two seniors were part of a delegation of Scottish school children who visited Auschwitz to learn more directly some of the well-documented crimes committed in Auschwitz and the other death camps. Chloe and Kyle led S1 assembly and also visited a number of classes to speak to pupils.

Change of Telephone Number:
Due to technical difficulties, the school’s new telephone system will not now become fully operational until Monday 13 February. From that date, the school telephone number will change to 01698 274950. Anyone calling the old number will hear a voice message redirecting them to this new one.
Diary Dates:
Parents are asked to note school will be closed in February on Thursday 9, Friday 10, Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 for a combination of the holiday weekend and staff in-service days.
Education into Employment Workshop:
Pupils in S2 pupils will shortly be asked to personalise their course of study in S3 by choosing which subjects they will study on more depth in third year. As part of the support programme linked to this choice programme, students from Strathclyde University recently conducted an ‘Education into Employment’ workshop with all S2 classes. The students helped pupils to think about course choices in relation to jobs and movement to college and university after leaving school. Every pupil took part in the group activities and discussions and demonstrated real enthusiasm for the tasks set. Feedback from second pupils was extremely positive.
‘Wonderful World Club’:
Geography teacher, Miss Kirsty Logan, of the Humanities Department has started a new lunchtime club for pupils entitled ‘Wonderful World’. The club will meet on a Thursday and gives pupils an opportunity to look at some of the more amazing features of life on our planet. At the first meeting, those who attended enjoyed looking at excerpts from the BBC’s ‘Frozen Planet’ series. There was a high level of interest and the ‘Wonderful World Club’ looks likely to be a popular lunchtime haven for many pupils.
